GAP YEAR CLASSES
GY101 - LIFE OF CHRIST
This study is considered foundational for all other New Testament studies.
Christ’s life ministry in His incarnation is examined harmonically and
chronologically. The major emphasis is developing an understanding of the
unfolding of Christ’s mission both as the Messiah and Saviour.
GY102 -ENGLISH COMMUNICATION
This course covers the basic principles of English emphasising the
following; parts of speech, mechanics, grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and
spelling. This course provides practice in writing various types of essays
and is foundational for the standards of work at BBC.
GY103 - METHODS OF BIBLE TEACHING
This course prepares teachers for communicating God’s Word. It considers
purposeful Bible study, preparation of aims, laws of teaching, application
of lessons, and developing the various methods of lesson presentation.
GY104 - OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY
This course is divided over each term.
A. The first class studies the first five books of the Old Testament. It is
a study of the early history of God’s people. Emphasis is given to the
periods of Abraham and Moses.
B. The second class studies the books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth
C. The third class incorporates the period of Samuel, the Kings, and
Nehemiah.
GY105 - DOCTRINE I
This course includes the fundamentals of the major doctrines of theology.
The areas of study are Bibliology, Theology Proper, Pneumatology,
Soteriology, and Ecclesiology. It gives a general understanding of Bible
doctrines and lays a foundation for further study.
GY106 - DOCTRINE II
This course is a continuation of Doctrine I and includes Christology,
Anthropology, Hamartiology, Angelology, and Eschatology.
GY107 - LIFE OF PAUL
A historical study of the life of Paul is made with reference to the
geography of his missionary journeys. His methods and accomplishments in
establishing churches are a major emphasis. Each epistle is viewed in the
context in which it was written. Special emphasis is also given to the
occasion, purpose, and characteristics of each epistle.
GY108 - PERSONAL EVANGELISM
A student learns how to use the Scriptures in leading people to Christ.
Emphasis is placed on the presentation of the Gospel in order to win people
to Christ.
GY109 - GENERAL EPISTLES
James, I Peter, and I John are studied. The purpose, structure, outline, and
application of each book are stressed.
GY110 - BAPTIST HISTORY AND DISTINCTIVES
This course is a study of the Anabaptist of the pre-Reformation and
Reformation periods with emphasis on its principles, development, and
impacts.
SECOND YEAR CLASSES
SY201 - HERMANEUTICS
This course aids the student toward understanding and achieving proficiency
in the science and art of biblical interpretation. The principles of the
literal, historical, grammatical, and contextual method of interpretation
are discussed and established as being correct. Application of these proper
hermeneutical principles is practiced throughout the term as various
passages of scripture are interpreted.
SY202 - MINOR PROPHETS
Introductory matters relating to each of the twelve Minor Prophets are
discussed. A survey of each book is offered with emphasis placed upon the
prophecies as they relate to Israel. Special attention is given to the past
and future judgments upon Israel and the Messianic hope offered by the
prophets.
SY203 - CHRISTIAN ETHICS
This course is a brief survey of the subject of ethics and systems of
thought. Primary emphasis is on a biblical and practical approach to right
conduct. Many contemporary issues will be considered.
SY204 - BIBLICAL COUNSELLING I
This course is a study of how to make counselling a vital and natural part
of the local church, emphasising the development of preventative programmes.
This course is intended to give a survey of counselling principles and
needs. It will lay a foundation to help the student to better understand the
issues he/she will face and how to use God’s Word to bring help to those who
struggle with these issues. This will not be accomplished without careful
self-examination; thus, the student will be encouraged to do self-counsel,
learning how to take the Scriptures and bringing change to specific areas of
need in one’s life.
SY205 - SONG LEADING AND WORSHIP
This course covers rudimentary conducting techniques including beat
patterns, movement skills, and music fundamentals. It is intended to prepare
the prospective pastor, missionary, or church worker to lead the
congregation in a worship service. Discussion of worship methods and
philosophy will also be included. It is a continuing education course
designed to equip the student to obtain a qualification by passing the Grade
One examination of the Royal School of Music.
SY206 - PNEUMATOLOGY
This course is a study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, It examines the
person and deity of the Holy Spirit, as well as the work of the Sprit in
regard to the Lord Jesus, mankind in general, Old Testament believers, New
Testament believers, and future ministry.
SY207 - I & II CORINTHIANS
This course gives a general overview of the books with introductory matters
such as the occasion and purpose of the letter and the origin of the church
at Corinth. Examination of the major teachings of the books is included.
SY208 - BIBLICAL COUNSELLING II
This course is a continuation and enhancement of Biblical Counselling I. In
this class the student watch counselling in practice and delve deeper into
his own motives and attitudes by committing to accountability within the
class.
SY209 - INTRODUCTION TO MISSIONS
This course is an introduction to the scriptural basis of Christian missions
and to the definition of missions. Historic missionary efforts are evaluated
by biblical principles.
SY210 - MISSION LIFE AND WORK
This course is a practical study of the missionary’s life and work which
includes his personal preparation, internship, deputation, departure and
arrival on the field, first term and furlough.
SY211 - ROMANS
This course begins with a brief discussion of the introductory matter of the
book of Romans and then moves into a study of key passages.
SY212 - PASTORAL THEOLOGY – for men only
This course provides the student practical information and experience in
regard to pastoring a church. The student learns how to develop a philosophy
of ministry, organize his work, set and implement ministerial goals,
supervise a church staff, conduct weddings and funerals, lead the church
ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. He also learns how to conduct
other special meetings of the church as well as organize new churches, solve
church problems, promote special days and other related function of the
Baptist church. The student learns through a practical, hands-on approach
where applicable.
SY213 - BIBLICAL WOMEN’S MINISTRIES – for women only
This course is designed to prepare the student for practical ministry with
women. Emphasis is given to the spiritual, academic, and domestic areas of
development in order to lead and establish ministry to women in the
churches.
THIRD YEAR CLASSES
TY301 – HOMILETICS - for men only
This course is designed to aid in sermon preparation and delivery. The goal
is to be able to rightly divide the Word of God and to present the Gospel by
means of various delivery methods.
TY302 – CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT – for women only
This course helps the teacher develop skills and methods of teaching the
Bible with consideration to the varying ages of children’s ministry within
the church. The student also learns to develop a Bible curriculum for the
Sunday school and examines various methods of presentation.
TY303 - MAJOR PROPHETS
This course seeks to give an overview of the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and
Ezekiel, and Daniel with the view of special attention to the message of the
prophets for Israel and for the prophetic meaning for the end times.
TY304 - ESCHATOLOGY
This course enlarges the student’s knowledge and comprehension relative to
prophetic portions of Scripture. Methods of interpretation, the Divine
covenants made with Israel, prophecies pertaining to Gentile nations, the
Church, the tribulation, the millennium, and final judgment are some of the
themes discussed. This course is taught from a premillennial,
pretribulational viewpoint.
TY305 - METHODS STRATEGY OF CHURCH PLANTING
This course provides the student with a broad knowledge of church growth
strategies being implemented today and helps him to evaluate such
methodologies in the light of Scripture. The student gains a practical
knowledge of sound biblical methods of promoting church growth and learns
how to apply these methods in various church settings.
TY306 - CHRISTIOLOGY
This course is a study of the doctrine of Jesus Christ in regard to His
eternal existence and essence, incarnation, uniqueness as the God-man,
impeccability, death, resurrection, and ascension.
TY307 - PAULINE EPISTLES
This course seeks to give an overview of the books of Galatians, Ephesians,
Philippians, Colossians, and I and II Thessalonians. Notice is made of the
background and main teaching of each book.
TY308 - ECCLESIOLOGY
This course is a study of the doctrine of the local church. It includes such
areas as origin, distinctive nature for this present age, organization,
government, ordinances, and the specific role of the pastor.
TY309 - CHURCH HISTORY
This is a study of Christianity from the first century through the
Reformation with special emphasis on the institutional history of the church
as well as theological developments in the church. The first conflicts of
Christianity with Judaism, paganism, Greek philosophy, Christianity as a
state religion, the rise and decline of the papacy and the reformers will be
discussed.
TY310 - APOLOGETICS
Students are introduced to the major theological positions in apologetics.
They develop a biblical system which will enable them to present the gospel
to adherents of world religions.
TY311 - REVELATION
This course is an analytical study of the book. The approach is “futuristic”
in support of the pretribulational, premillennial position. The governing
hermeneutical guideline is the literal-historical-grammatical principle.
TY312 - CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION
This is a concentrated study of the factors essential in communicating
biblical concepts cross-culturally. The aim is to teach skills necessary to
understand other cultures and to interpret the gospel to them in ways that
would honour Christ.
TY313 - CHURCH MINISTRIES PRACTICUM
This course is a continuing education class solely for third year students.
The student will meet individually with the Dean and Principal during the
first week of class in each term to establish a programme of active church
involvement by which the student can take part in practical learning in his
local church ministries. This class will require the cooperation of the
student’s pastor as he will be asked to make a final summation and
evaluation of the student’s progress and capabilities. At the end of each
term the student will write a five page paper outlining the programme as set
forth, how it was implemented, and the successes and failures that he
experienced. A portfolio of work will be required as a completion of the
course. The goal of this class is to give practical experience in a real
church setting in order to better prepare the student for ministry.
